Meet Your Friendly Neighbourhood Arborist
TJ Yurko, ISA CA®, ISA TRAQ, CLHT
As an inquisitive appreciator of the natural world, I seek to share my passion, knowledge, and respect for our planet in a small yet meaningful way. Thus, I embarked on a lifelong journey to learn and teach everything there is to know about sustainable, ecological best practices for urban forests & landscapes.
Because I learned so much from nature in my childhood, I wanted to give what I loved a proper study. I began my academic career with the Calgary Zoo's Master Gardener Program in 2012 before studying horticulture and arboriculture sciences at Olds College. I continued my education at the University of Guelph, obtaining a Sustainable Landscapes Certificate (2015) and a Horticulturist Diploma with a Major in Natural Landscapes Management & Arboriculture (2016-2018).
Professionally, I am an ISA Certified Arborist® (ISA CA®), an ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified Arborist (ISA TRAQ), and a Certified Landscape Horticulturist Technician (CLHT). As a lifelong learner, I aim to continuously expand my knowledge with training opportunities and share this knowledge with others so they may also improve and grow. I actively obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) on subjects in Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, and Horticulture to help maintain my professional credentials.
I am also a professional member of the International Society of Arboriculture, ISA Prairie Chapter, Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease, and Calgary Horticultural Society. I absolutely love to volunteer and actively help out as a committee member, subject matter expert, judge/assessor, and content writer with several organizations including the International Society of Arboriculture, Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, and Calgary Horticultural Society. My goal is to help raise awareness and charitable contributions towards improving and maintaining ecological sustainability in urban environments.
